Guest Seminar Series

Guided and self-organized morphogenesis of the vertebrate anteroposterior axis.

Michel Bagnat, PhD (EMBL, Heidelberg) Duke University
Department of Cell Biology

Dr. Michel Bagnat investigates mechanisms linking physiological processes such as fluid secretion and membrane trafficking with organogenesis (gut, notochord and spine development), using live imaging and genetic modeling approaches in zebrafish. He has published seminal studies investigating cellular and molecular processes that control notochord patterning and segmentation and, of particular interest, in understanding how biophysical forces like hydrostatic pressure scaffolds and structures the developing spine. His research has provided an exciting new framework for understanding the roles of the vertebrate notochord in both normal spine development and in the etiopathogenesis of scoliosis.
