The central role that RNA processing plays in the control of gene expression of multiple mammalian viruses makes it an attractive target for the development of novel therapeutics to control these infections. Work in my laboratory has primarily focused on understanding the determinants of HIV-1 RNA processing control to identify the cis and trans-acting factors that play critical roles in virus replication. Our studies have not only resulted in the characterization of multiple such factors but also in the identification of small molecules that suppress HIV-1 replication by affecting the metabolism of viral RNA. Subsequent work has also demonstrated that a subset of these compounds is also effective inhibitors of unrelated viruses (adenovirus, coronaviruses) suggesting their use as pan-antivirals. Current efforts are directed at developing a deeper understanding of the mechanisms controlling viral RNA processing and the action of the compounds identified.
