Reinstalling Novel Cell Cycle Checkpoints in Aggressive Drug Resistant Cancers

Dr. Lisa Porter, PhD Distinguished Professor Director, WE-SPARK Health Institute, University of Windsor

Research over the past two decades has revealed the presence of cancer cells with stem cell-like properties capable of both initiating and progressing a tumour mass. The Porter Lab has established that an atypical cell cycle protein, Spy1 (RINGO; gene SPDYA), drives symmetric division of several forms of cancer stem cells and is a key regulator of stemness-differentiation balance in subsets of tissues, including the brain and the breast. This presentation will describe the biology of the Spy1 protein family and the data to date showing the role that these proteins play in driving aggressive drug resistant disease.
