Erin Styles
PhD, Associate Chair, Undergraduate Coordinator

Personally, pedagogically, and academically, my goals are focussed on designing, maintaining, and continually improving curricula and academic programs that provide practical, actionable training in molecular genetics and microbiology. My research focuses on course and program assessments of success, including the attainment of learning objectives within individual courses, post-graduate success, and the overall impact of programs using a variety of metrics.
My teaching is grounded in the idea that students generate knowledge, rather than passively take it in, and I draw on elements of student-centred learning and student activism in the classroom. A central theme in my teaching and research is active learner metacognition, which asks students to own and reflect on their learning experience. The assumption that students are the experts on their own learning experience underpins both my teaching and my research.
