BIOSKETCH:

Laura Zahavich, MSc, CGC has been a genetic counsellor at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) since 2009, where she originally served as a clinical genetic counsellor for the cleft lip and palate and cancer genetics programs  as well as a research genetic counsellor for the Canadian Pediatric Demyelinating Disease Study. Since 2013, Laura has worked in the Labatt Family Heart Centre with a focus on genetic counselling for cardiomyopathies, inherited arrhythmias and connective tissue disorders in the pediatric population. Laura is also involved in teaching and supervising genetic counselling students and is a Lecturer with the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of Toronto. Laura also provides teaching to medical trainees and inter-professional staff members including facilitating lectures as part of the SickKids Inter-professional Acute Care Paediatric Cardiology Certificate Course. Laura is also actively involved in several research studies within the Labatt Family Heart Centre. She has an interest in cross-cultural genetic counselling and served as an Inter-professional Education Specialist with the New Immigrant Support Network at SickKids, developing and facilitating workshops for staff members on clinical cultural competence. Laura received her Master's of Science in Genetic Counselling degree from the University of Toronto in 2009, and was certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling in 2010.
