Career Development Resources
You arrived on the page for MoGen's new mentorship program MoGen Career Connections. If you are looking for general career development resources click here.
The MoGen Career Connections program gave me the push I needed to plan my career path after grad school. During this program, I was encouraged to reflect on my personal values and goals first and this helped me identify which careers I was not only qualified for, but those that would also be fulfilling. The format of the program took the overwhelming task of answering "What will you do after grad school?" and broke it into manageable steps.2023 Career Connections mentee
What is MoGen Career Connections?
This program aims to provide MoGen's graduate students with the tools, resources, and connections they need to a) actively work on their career development and b) transition into and succeed in their chosen careers after graduate training. In a supportive, inclusive environment, participants will partake in tailored career development workshops, cultivate self-reflection, foster mentoring relationships, and generate networking opportunities.
We will support program participants to connect with MoGen alumni or other professionals who will accompany our grad students' career exploration with personalized advice and insights.
Connect with and learn from professionals in different fields, find out about opportunities and refine your career development skills!
Why participate in MoGen Career Connections?
We believe that as a mentee you will get
- An increased sense of awareness and understanding of career options post-graduation
- A better understanding of navigating a successful job search
- A better feeling for workplace culture
- A stronger sense of confidence and hope for career prospects post graduation
- A decreased sense of isolation and loneliness, and an increased sense of wellbeing.
- We also believe that mentees from groups underrepresented in scientific careers will feel more confidence and see themselves reflected in scientific careers.
Who can apply and what are the expectations?
- You can apply if you are currently enrolled in a graduate program in the Department of Molecular Genetics and if you...
- have an expressed interest in transitioning to non-academic careers.
- Active participation in the mentorship program (ca. 5 sessions, plus self-directed meet-ups with your mentor) is expected. Also, we ask participants to complete program surveys before and at different points after the program.
How can I apply?
Participation in the program is voluntary. Grad students at any stage are invited to apply. Note that the cohorts are limited in size, and that priority will be given to upper year participants. If you don't get into the program this round, we encourage you to apply again for a later iteration!
Stay tuned for the Fall 2024 application cycle to open!
