Yayra Gbotsyo, a first-year student in the M.H.Sc. in Medical Genomics program, has been featured on the Graduate Life Sciences Education Student Feature page by the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. The feature was written in celebration of Black History Month and highlights Yayra’s journey from Ho, a small town in Ghana to the Medical Genomics Program. Yayra hopes to apply the skills and knowledge she gains through the program to impact the lives of patients from underrepresented communities. In particular, Yayra hopes to contribute to cancer research focusing on combatting aggressive triple-negative breast cancer, the most prevalent cancer in women of African and Caribbean descent. Yayra also provides her perspective on the lack of ethnic diversity in genetics research and aims to continue advocating for BIPOC patients, students, and scientists.
