Our MoGen GSA team had a blast at the Science Rendezvous event! We brought the world of molecular genetics to life with the help of 17 talented students, 13 volunteers, and three planners. A special shout-out goes to the GSA graphic designer for creating captivating visuals for the marketing materials.
At our booth, we offered three interactive activities that engaged visitors of all ages. The Banana DNA extraction activity was a hit, allowing children to discover the wonders of genetics by extracting DNA from bananas. They even took their extracted DNA home in a centrifuge tube and created personalized necklaces or bracelets. We were thrilled to conduct approximately 200 DNA extractions in a single day!
Another crowd favourite was the Candy DNA activity, where kids had a blast constructing double helices using Twizzlers, marshmallows, and toothpicks. Due to the overwhelming response, we had to restock our materials three times!
For our active visitors, we organized a Pipette Racing challenge. Children raced against each other, showcasing their speed and precision in filling 96-well plates with a pipette. Around 170 participants eagerly competed, and their names were proudly displayed on the scoreboard.
Science Rendezvous was a resounding success, thanks to the dedicated MoGen volunteers. Stay tuned for more exciting events and initiatives from MoGen as we inspire the next generation of scientific pioneers!
