Dr. Peter Dirks Co-recipient of the 2023 Canadian Cancer Society Robert L. Noble Prize
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Dirks, an internationally recognized neurosurgeon-scientist and Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto, is the co-recipient of the 2023 Robert L. Noble Prize from the Canadian Cancer Society.
Dr. Dirks has made significant contributions to our understanding of how brain cancers develop, focusing on the biology of brain tumours in children and adults. In 2004, his team was the first to discover cancer stem cells in human brain tumours, a breakthrough that launched a new field of research connecting stem cells to cancer biology. His work has earned him global recognition, with over 230 publications and 49,500 citations, placing him among the top researchers in his field.
Dr. Dirks’s research, supported by organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society, continues to drive innovation in the development of precision-based treatments for brain tumour patients.
