The Department of Molecular Genetics is pleased to announce two outstanding achievements by our graduate students.

Kaitlin Laverty has been awarded the Barbara Vivash Award in Molecular Genetics for the most outstanding PhD thesis of the 2023-2024 academic year.

Her thesis, "On the RNA-binding Specificities of RNA-binding Proteins," was recognized for its exceptional scholarship and contributions to molecular genetics research. This award, valued at $10,048.20, acknowledges her oral defense and the impact of her work. Kaitlin will also receive an official award and an invitation to present her research at an upcoming departmental seminar.

Katherine Rynard has been named the 2024-2025 David Stephen Cant Graduate Scholarship in Stem Cell Research recipient.

This $23,391.93 scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student demonstrating excellence in stem cell research. Established by Peter and Sally Cant in memory of their son, David, the award supports students working in stem cell-related fields, with preference given to those studying neurological disorders such as autism, macular degeneration, or vision recovery interventions.

Congratulations to Kaitlin and Katherine!
