Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiatives

The Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto is deeply committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) at all levels—within our faculty, staff, learners, partners, and the broader molecular genetics community. Our commitment is aligned with the University of Toronto’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Excellence.

Our key initiatives include:

  • Faculty-wide workshops on integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion in both didactic courses, clinical rotations, and research.
  • Outreach programs aimed at raising awareness of careers in genetics.
  • Active participation of leadership and faculty in DEI initiatives, collaborating with both internal and external partners.
  • Creating an award for the Molecular Genetics Black and Indigenous Scholars Academic Excellence Award

Professional Standards in Mentorship and Education (PSME)

To support these efforts, we established the Professional Standards in Mentorship and Education (PSME) committee, a group of faculty, staff and students dedicated to fostering a culture of equity, diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility within our academic community. The PSME upholds professional values of fairness, respect, and belonging, ensuring every individual, regardless of background, identity, or ability, is valued and supported.

Our Mission Includes

  • Advocating for inclusive practices that guarantee equal learning, career advancement, and leadership opportunities.
  • Establishing mentorship programs that offer guidance, support, and networking for students, faculty, and staff at all career stages.
  • Promoting a welcoming environment that values diverse perspectives, encourages open dialogue, and recognizes the contributions of individuals from all walks of life.
  • Collaborating with institutional stakeholders to create policies and programs that remove barriers to participation and success for all community members.
  • Through these initiatives, we aim to cultivate an academic environment where equity and inclusion are integral to professional growth and mentorship, ensuring every individual is empowered to reach their full potential.
