Dr. Ivakine seeks to understand disease pathogenesis and to develop next-generation genetic medicines for the treatment of rare inherited disorders.

His research includes:

  • Developing a powerful technique called saturation prime editing to predict disease risk at a single nucleotide resolution.
  • Generating cellular and animal models of disease to understand disease pathogenesis.
  • Developing and testing treatments for genetic diseases, particularly neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions like Niemann-Pick disease type C, Tay-Sachs disease, and Frontotemporal Dementia.
  • Utilizing genome engineering tools such as CRISPR-Cas9, prime editing, base editing, and CRISPR activation to study mutations that lead to genetic diseases and explore new ways of treating diseases at the DNA level.

Courses:

  • MMG3006Y: Genetic Models of Disease & Development
  • MGY250: Molecular Medicine & Human Genetics
  • Functional Genomics & Proteomics
