GSA Quarterly Updates - April 2023

Over the past several months, the MoGen GSA has been happy to help organise the department’s Holiday Party, a movie night for the students, and welcoming incoming students with March Recruitment Day.

Annual MoGen Departmental Holiday Party

It's been three years since the last in-person MoGen Holiday Party but in December 2022 we were finally able to return to the Faculty Club for our traditional winter celebration. Students, faculty, staff, and guests were treated to an extensive selection of food, a live jazz band and DJ, as well as our photobooth. The GSA is very much looking forward to organizing this year's Holiday Party!

Movie Night

Shortly after that, in February, many MoGen students braved a snowstorm for a private viewing of the genetics film GATTACA at the Revue theatre. It was a great opportunity to see this classic film in such a unique space in downtown Toronto!

March Recruitment Day

The hustle and bustle continued into March, where MoGen welcomed potential incoming students at March Recruitment Day. It was a day packed completely full of introductions, meet & greets with current students, meetings with profs, and lots of food! A few MoGen students came out to answer questions, show the recruits around the different MoGen buildings, and partake in some of the activities.

Upcoming Events

Later this spring, the department will be hosting our annual celebration to mark the end of the reclass/qualifying exam period. Stay tuned for more details! In addition to this, there are some MoGen Career Development Symposium Preparatory Workshops coming up on April 25^th and May 8^th – if you’re interested, look out for these in your email and please sign up! Just around the corner on May 13^th is Science Rendezvous, where MoGen will have a booth where student volunteers will be teaching science to high school students. Finally, we’re sure you’ve all heard of the annual MoGen Retreat at Niagara-on-the-Lake this September! Registration is due May 18^th, so please sign up now if you’re interested via the link in the registration email.
