The Department is proud to announce that teaching-stream faculty member and head of the MHSc in Medical Genomics program, Dr. Erin Styles won the 2022 Early Career Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentorship Award as part of the Graduate Faculty Teaching Awards hosted by the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

Erin's teaching style has students create knowledge rather than passively learn and incorporates student-centred learning and classroom activism. She integrates metacognition in her graduate and life sciences learning and encourages students to reflect on their learning experience, specifically what and how they're learning. The assumption that students are the experts on their own learning experience enables her participatory course design and progressive colleague-like relationships with her students.

This follows the previous year when fellow MoGen PI Dr. Julie Claycomb won the 2020-2021 Mid-Career Award, showcasing the recent achievements of Departmental faculty in both research and teaching avenues. Dr. Claycomb herself also won the 2016-2017 Early Career Award, while Dr. Leah Cowen received the 2006-2007 one. Read more about this on the GLSE page.

Congratulations Dr. Styles!
